There's Someone Inside Your House ARC Review

There's Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins
4.5 Stars

Before I begin my review I want to talk about how this book came into my possession. Emma from Miss Print runs a program in which bloggers can adopt an ARC if they promise to review it. It really is a great program and I am so happy that I found it and was able to adopt my copy of There's Someone Inside Your House. I can't wait to adopt my next ARC. If you're interested, you can check out the ARC adoption page here.

There's Someone Inside Your House was pitched to me as Stephanie's previous work, Anna and the French Kiss, meets Scream. As a lover of both of these things, I was so down for it. Our book follows Makani Young, a teenage girl living in a place where she tends to stand out and she has a secret. I spent a good portion of this book trying to figure out what the hell this secret could be. She has a couple of friends and obviously a crush on a cute boy. These characters, Ollie, Darby, and Alex, intrigued me. They're all different in their own ways and they all fit in Makani's life seamlessly.

On to the murderrrrrr. Yes, I needed to exaggerate that word. The murders are gruesome and seemingly aimless. I honestly had no idea who the killer was or why they were doing it despite our main cast of characters speculation. What I did like is that this town kind of came together and decided not to let this disrupt their lives, for the most part anyway. The hard thing in reading this is realizing that things like this do happen. Serial killers are out there and like ours, they aren't always the obvious pick. Now this isn't some new realization. It's more like a reminder. I have a love/hate relationship with that fact. In fiction it's wonderful entertainment. However, in real life it is absolutely terrifying.

Earlier I mentioned the mix that this book was pitched to me as. I feel like that's a very accurate pitch. All the cuteness you find in Anna and the French Kiss can also be found in There's Someone Inside Your House and it's a nice distraction from the more gory things going on. On the other hand, this killer has all the flair that you would find in the 1996 film Scream. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. The newer television show of the same name is good as well. Overall, this book did not disappoint. I knocked it down half a star because I felt we needed a tad more meat in between all of the murders. Just to get to know the characters a tiny bit better. I still LOVE it, I'd still reread it, and I definitely recommend it. It made the hairs on my arm stand up more than once.

If you're looking for a good thriller that also has a contemporary twist, then this is for you. I can't wait to see what Stephanie does next. I really think she's great at what she does and I want to see more of it in the future. Give me all of the books. Contemporaries, thrillers, I want it all. Is this book on your radar? Have you been lucky enough to read it already? There's Someone Inside Your House comes out on September 26, 2017 and is available for pre-order now. Let me know if you plan to check it out in the comments. Happy reading!

  1. Ok take 2!
First off I wanted to say I had never heard of the ARC adoption so I will be looking into that.
Now for the juicy stuff. I really did enjoy this story. I do the majority of my reading at night and yes I was often scared and nervous while reading this story. I would hear a noise and be creepied out. I thought the way the killing were explained were gruesome and glorious and left me wanting more but at the same time wanting to hide under the covers or under my bed entirely. I enjoyed that when it switched perspectives you knew what was about to happen. I really enjoyed this book (4 stars for sure)!
However, there were a few instances of insensitives that may or may not pop up in the final print. Also the ending was underwhelming for how awesome the rest of the book was. Maybe it felt rushed or sloppy or something. I just wanted a bit more explanation or something. But this is by far the best YA thriller/suspense I have read in awhile.
